How to stop binge eating

Until very recently, I did not know that I was suffering from binge eating disorder. Studies show that in the united states alone, over 2.3 million people suffer from binge eating disorder and very few of these people acknowledge that they have this condition. People with BED mostly suffer in silence mostly because they don’t know what it is.

What is binge eating disorder (BED)?

Binge-eating disorder is a serious eating disorder in which you frequently consume unusually large amounts of food and feel unable to stop eating.

It is embarrassing yet normal to admit that I went through binge eating for a very long time, where when I am around people I ate healthy and clean but when I go back to my own comfort I indulge in unhealthy foods excessively. This messed with my body function and weight loss goals most of the time and that is one of the reasons I decided to create healthier recipes for all the unhealthy foods I binge on like chocolate, pizza, crispy chicken and so much more.


Symptoms of binge eating disorder (BED)

  • Eating a lot more food than your body needs, even when uncomfortably full.
  • Eating uncontrollably fast and past the point of being full.
  • Having meals even when one is not hungry.
  • After eating so much food, one feels so disgusted and grossed out by their actions.
  • Eating in private because of embarrassment
  • Not having the ability or will to stop eating
  • Dieting all the time without weight loss results

Causes of binge eating

  • Emotions. Different emotions like happiness, sadness, overwhelmedness, depression, anxiety, etc can cause one to overeat
  • Eating to fill an unclear emptiness/ void
  • Strict diets
  • Over-exercising to compensate for overeating
  • Medical conditions like obesity, bulimia, etc
  • Disorders from substance use or abuse

How to stop binge eating.

Binge eating has become a serious medical problem and below are some of the ways in which it can be stopped, prevented or reduced;

  • Seek help. I know this can be very difficult to do considering in most cases its a private condition but studies show that once you acknowledge that you have a problem and talk about it, you get clarity and understanding not only of the condition but also what triggers this habit and you learn how to avoid such scenarios after being aware.   • Stop dieting. One of the main causes of binge eating is strict diets. Many of us are constantly trying to lose weight fast and end up trying so many restrictive diets that eventually lead to binging. Try putting these diets aside and embrace intuitive eating, where you listen to your body and feed it what it wants in reasonable portions or better yet create healthy versions of these cravings and train your body to adjust to them. This process might seem long but a healthy lifestyle a long-term weight loss is a journey and not a destination. You constantly have to work to be the best version of yourself.
  • Start practicing self-care. Learn to love yourself enough and appreciate where you are in life, mentally, physically and emotionally. Through Intuitive eating, you get to learn yourself and appreciate yourself and if you can’t do it alone, fake it till you make it. Think about what a happy place is for you and practice these habits until they become part of you.

The hardest part of stopping binge eating is acknowledging there is a problem and that you have to do something about it. In most cases or at least for me, I keep telling myself today is the last day and every day becomes the last day. You have to get rid of the all or nothing mentality because its what messes you up in the first place.

Because it can be hard to start the stopping process, take baby steps and grow slowly, also know you are not alone and that we all struggle so seek help if you need a little support.
